Although the majority of Beninese women use skilled health care personnel for antenatal care and delivery, the high rate of maternal mortality indicates the need for more access to high quality obstetric care. Poverty, unemployment, increased living costs, and dwindling resources increasingly drive the Beninese to migrate.

After enslavement was abolished, France took over the country and renamed it French Dahomey. In , Dahomey gained full independence from France.
The sovereign state has had a tumultuous history since then, with many different democratic governments, military coups, and military governments. In , it was replaced by the current multi-party Republic of Benin. During the colonial period and at independence, the country was known as Dahomey.
